Computing at WCPS

Computing is integrated across all curriculum areas as well as a specialist lesson in KS1.

At WCPS, Computing is an exciting and integral part of the curriculum in Key Stage 1. It is taught across three key strands—Digital Citizenship, Content Creation, and Coding—with a focus on developing both practical skills and responsible digital habits.

Digital Citizenship

We help boys become safe, respectful, and responsible users of technology. Through age-appropriate discussions and activities, pupils learn about online safety, privacy, and digital etiquette. They explore how to use devices responsibly, understand the importance of keeping personal information private, and are introduced to the concept of balanced screen time. Resources such as Common Sense Education and ThinkUKnow support this learning.

Content Creation

In this strand, boys develop their creative and presentation skills using a range of digital tools. They learn to use programs like Purple MashMicrosoft Word, and Book Creator to type, format text, insert images, and create simple multimedia projects. These activities encourage communication, visual design, and storytelling, helping pupils express their ideas clearly through digital media.

Coding

Coding is introduced through fun, hands-on tools that build logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Pupils begin by exploring Bee-Bots and Blue-Bots to understand basic programming concepts such as sequencing and directional commands. As they progress, they move on to using Espresso Coding, where they learn to create interactive stories, animations, and simple games by combining code blocks. This early exposure fosters confidence in computational thinking from a young age.
